The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, the shimmering gold 43-story tower that dominates the south end of the Strip, will get a new name and a new interior next year.
MGM Resorts International announced a partnership Monday with the Morgans Hotel Group to launch Delano Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay.
Delano Las Vegas will take over and redesign all 1,100 suites at The Hotel. Plans also call for new bars, lounges, restaurants and nightclubs.
The name change and renovations should be complete by the end of 2013.
“In keeping with our commitment to create superior experiences for our guests, transforming The Hotel into Delano Las Vegas will add a new dimension of energy and excitement to the Las Vegas Strip," Chuck Bowling, president and chief operating officer of Mandalay Bay, said in a statement
As part of the renovations, the Light Group will launch several restaurants, including a casual American bistro by chef Brian Massie, a Japanese restaurant by chef Akira Back and an update to the Russian-themed eatery Red Square. The Light Group also will manage a new nightclub at the property.
The Morgans Hotel Group is a 90-percent owner of the Light Group.
“We've had our eye on Las Vegas for many years and have finally found the right location and opportunity,” Morgans Hotel Group CEO Michael Gross said in a statement. “Delano, as a brand, evokes luxury with an unexpected touch of individuality. This enables our guests to easily discern between mere travel and the unparalleled experience at Delano. We can see no better market and partner to help us launch our largest property to date."
The Morgans Hotel Group, which operates the Delano South Beach hotel in Miami Beach, Fla., previously tried to bring the Delano concept to Las Vegas as part of the failed Echelon casino development.

The Delano style will be a tough look to pull off in Las Vegas but hopefully a welcome change to The Hotel and growth for MGM Resorts.
Whatever it takes to put butts in beds is what needs to be done!

Nice to see the reinvention of the Strip pick up in pace recently. That said, I'd think an editor would have redirected the descriptive of Echelon as "failed." Boyd was just provided another extension to complete, and there is no indication that it has abandoned the project, just delayed it. "Failed" = editorializing.
Seems like the MGM empire is slowly releasing its properties. I have no doubt they will jettison The Hotel from their empire once all is said and done. The Hotel is great, but it wasn't distinct enough to make people pay more.
After so much consolidation it's nice to see the market correct itself and let in new hotel operators.

Ask most any Boyd stock holder if Echelon is something besides a failed project. IF it ever opens, it will be at least TEN YEARS late.
Delano after F "D" R ? why don't ttey call it the "Harry Reid"
so what will happen to the current employees of The Hotel? Will they continue to be MGM Resorts employees? Morgans/Delano/Light Group? (Hotel operations, not F&B/Entertainment) Inquiring minds wanna know :)
