McCarran passenger traffic falls flat while taxi trips dip

Passenger traffic was flat at McCarran International Airport in July, and the number of people who used the Las Vegas airport in the first seven months of the year was nearly the same as in the first seven months of 2012.

The Clark County Aviation Department today reported that 3.7 million passengers arrived and departed at McCarran for the month, with most of the decline occurring on domestic flights. International traffic slowed its acceleration to a 2.6 percent increase over a year ago, and air tour traffic was up 9.4 percent.

Three of the top five scheduled airlines serving McCarran, including market leader Southwest Airlines, reported a decline in traffic. Southwest traffic was off 1.8 percent to 1.49 million passengers. United and Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air also were off, but legacy carriers Delta and American had increases of 9.9 percent and 8.7 percent, respectively.

Delta and American increases were the result of a greater number of flights and the use of larger aircraft.

On the international side, British Airways and Panama-based Copa Airlines added new flights since July 2012, resulting in percentage increases of more than 30 percent. Nine of the 15 international carriers with flights to McCarran had increases over last year.

Separately, the Nevada Taxicab Authority reported a slight dip in taxi trips in July compared with a year ago but an increase in revenue.

Southern Nevada’s 16 taxi companies reported 2.17 million taxi trips for July, a 1 percent decline from a year ago. The state agency also reported drivers collected an average $14.54 per trip, a 2.2 percent increase over last year.
