Threatened taxi strike averted, contract negotiations extended

Representatives of the Yellow-Checker-Star taxi group and the Industrial Technical Professional Employees union said they have extended contract negotiations through the end of January, averting a threatened strike that could have started at midnight Saturday.

Negotiators haven’t set a new meeting date, but the current contract has been extended through midnight Jan. 31. A federal mediator is coordinating talks.

A union representative familiar with the negotiations said the mood of the talks has been tense, and both sides are still apart on pay issues.

The Nevada Taxicab Authority earlier this week prepared for the possibility of simultaneous strikes by the ITPE against Yellow-Checker-Star and the United Steelworkers union against the Frias Transportation Group.

The two cab companies are Clark County’s largest taxi operators, representing about 55 percent of cabs on the road.

Taxi regulators authorized their administrator to allow companies not affected by the strike to operate up to 30 additional vehicles per company.
