Executive Class:

Meet Connie Akridge: Nevada Bar President

Although she’s been president of the Nevada State Bar Association for just a couple of months, Jones Vargas attorney Connie Akridge is making a significant impact as one of the top businesswomen in Las Vegas. Akridge spoke with VEGAS INC about her new position, as well as the challenges and benefits of being a lawyer in the Silver State.

What was your first job?

My first important job right out of college was at Tyson Foods. I studied writing and journalism as an undergrad, and I did their employee newsletters. I learned a lot about how a big business operates.

What was your worst job?

I’d say working in restaurants, but I really learned a lot from doing that. I worked at a place called Sirloin Stockade to put myself through college as an undergrad. At the end of the day, you smelled like grease. It was a messy job.

What’s the best advice your mother ever gave you?

To mind my manners and to be polite and respectful to others.

What’s your business motto?

Listen closely to what your clients have to say—really listen to what they’re asking you to help them with. Try to find the most creative resolution for them.

What’s different about being a lawyer in Nevada versus other states?

I think it’s better. (Laughing.) The great thing about being a lawyer in Nevada is that there are opportunities you won’t find in other markets. I’ve been practicing here since 1988, and it has been great.

Do you think Nevada will recover from the Great Recession?

Nevadans are very resilient people. It’ll take some time and effort, but we always figure out how to succeed.

What’s the most challenging or difficult part of your job?

It’s not even the job, really. It’s the time commitment that’s the challenge, but I’m honored to serve.

What are the two CDs you’d want with you on a desert island?

Something classical, so maybe the soundtrack to The Pianist. And Steely Dan. I love Steely Dan.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?

Missouri. We have a log cabin there in the woods near the Ozarks. I’m originally from Springfield, MO.

You have a JD and an MBA from the University of Arkansas. Do you think having an MBA has helped you in your law practice?

I think it has given me a really interesting perspective and more understanding about the concerns of businesspeople. It’s absolutely a benefit.

Do you think being a woman in law has given you any extra challenges?

I think maybe earlier in my career. For a lot of women, the challenge is when you’re raising your family. I have two sons who are now 24 and 27. Raising kids takes up a lot of time and effort if you want to do it absolutely right.

What’s your most valuable possession?

Probably a pair of earrings and a watch my husband got me for our 35th wedding anniversary. The gifts marked that occasion so beautifully.

What kind of car do you drive?

A silver Mercedes.

What’s your favorite pair of shoes?

I love Tory Birch shoes. I have a pair of patent leather pumps that I love. Although, my running shoes are a close second. They’re Nike Air Max shoes. They’re so good to run in.
