Spirit plans flights from Las Vegas to San Diego, offers $9 fares

Spirit Airlines announced Thursday that it will begin flying between Las Vegas and San Diego in September.

The Miramar, Fla.,-based airline will begin service Sept. 7 with two daily non-stop flights on the route and then will increase to three flights Sept. 22.

The low-cost carrier announced earlier this week that it would also begin a new service between McCarran International Airport and Portland, Ore., on Sept. 22.

Spirit also has nonstop routes to Detroit, Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International, Chicago’s O’Hare International and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Las Vegas. Most of Spirit’s flights are on the East Coast and to the Caribbean.

The 70-minute flight from Las Vegas and San Diego will leave at 8:10 a.m., noon, and 6:55 p.m. Flights will leave San Diego at 11:20 a.m., 5:05 p.m. and 9:10 p.m.

Spirit is launching the new route promoting a limited number of $9 fares to customers who are members of the airline’s $9 Fare Club, which costs $60 a year to join, but offers members deep discounts on some flights.
