For the sixth consecutive year, more than 750 NV Energy employees and family members volunteered at Three Square Food Bank as part of the national Martin Luther King Day of Service.

For the sixth consecutive year, more than 750 NV Energy employees and family members volunteered at Three Square Food Bank as part of the national Martin Luther King Day of Service. They packed 3,800 bags of food for the “Backpack for Kids” program, which provides a bag of kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods to children who lack adequate food over the weekend.

Barrick Gold donated $50,000 to Three Square Food Bank during its holiday match campaign.

Hakkasan Las Vegas Restaurant and Nightclub at MGM Grand donated $50,636 to Three Square Food Bank during its first “Hakkasan Gives Back” initiative.

The staff of XS and Tryst nightclubs donated $190,698 in toys to the annual Chet Buchanan and the KLUC Morning Zoo Toy Drive, which benefits HELP of Southern Nevada. The drive benefited about 3,000 families and more than 19,000 children in the community.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension master gardener Richard Leifried was honored for contributing more than 20,000 volunteer hours on gardening projects. Leifried has been a master gardener in the Las Vegas program since 1994. He volunteers regularly on the home-gardening help line and helps organize monthly membership meetings.

A $250,000 contribution from the Caesars Foundation and Caesars Entertainment helped the Public Education Foundation’s Teacher Exchange expand with the start of Teacher Exchange Express, its new school supply delivery vehicle. The Teacher Exchange is a reuse/repurpose/surplus resource center available to Southern Nevada public school teachers. It collects books, office supplies, manufacturing and convention overruns, and other surplus materials originally headed for landfills and distributes them to teachers for use in the classroom.

Arizona Charlie’s locations at Boulder Highway and Decatur Boulevard assembled and donated 50 Thanksgiving food baskets that included a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority. Casino players were allowed to contribute player points to help purchase food baskets. Christmas food baskets were also distributed to the housing authority.

The Valley Auto Mall, its 20 dealerships and Clark County Family Services hosted 100 foster teens for a shopping spree and Christmas party. Each teen received a $100 Visa gift card and a trip to a local shopping center to purchase gifts of their choice. Prizes such as iPads, iPods, cameras, video games, computers and bikes were also given away. Prize sponsors include Fox 5, Swan Advertising, Gothic Landscaping, Audi Henderson, Chapman Chrysler Jeep, BMW of Henderson, Auto Nation Buick GMC, Findlay Acura, Findlay Cadillac, Ford Country, Findlay Fiat, Henderson Chevrolet, Lexus of Henderson, Findlay Honda Henderson, Findlay Toyota, Towbin Dodge, Findlay Lincoln, Henderson Nissan, Findlay Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz of Henderson.

America First Credit Union delivered nearly 100 pairs of new, gift-wrapped shoes to children at Gibson Middle School as part of the annual Warm the Soles project.

Fifth-grade students at Henderson International School donated 3,500 non-perishable items to Las Vegas Rescue Mission as part of its Meritas Touchpoints program. Through the program, students have the opportunity to study global environmental, social and economic issues with a Meritas sister school.

Community Ambulance, a locally owned and operated ambulance company, donated equipment to Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. Donations included an automated external defibrillator, oxygen tanks, EpiPens and teaching and certifying of the staff in CPR and use of the defibrillator.

Las Vegas Metro Police’s Bolden Area Command teamed up with local organization Keeping Everyone’s Eyes on the Neighborhood to host 500 underprivileged children for a holiday party and toy distribution.

Cox Communications employees donated hundreds of toys as part of Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly’s “Stuff A Bus” effort, which benefited foster and adopted children in Clark County.

Bank of America donated $14,800 to Lutheran Social Services of Nevada. A team of bank volunteers also helped the nonprofit organize newly received food items for its emergency food pantry.

The Western Apprenticeship Coordinators Association of Southern Nevada awarded Santiago Ricoy, a glazing apprentice and College of Southern Nevada student, a $500 scholarship.

Caesars Foundation funded the new Opportunity Village Board Room. The multipurpose room features a board table that seats as many as 40 people, as well as technology for presentations.

The Public Education Foundation provided Payless ShoeSource coupons to 200 students from seven elementary schools in the Clark County School District: Rex Bell, Wendell Williams, Matt Kelly, Fitzgerald, Booker, Kit Carson and Quannah McCall. The children were able to shop for a free pair of shoes over the holidays as part of the sixth annual Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids program.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness local chapter provided a holiday party for the residents of Adam’s House, a residential treatment facility.

The Salvation Army distributed about 12,000 toys and gift cards from 6,000 Christmas Angels. Recipients were boys and girls from newborn to age 14.

Bank of Nevada raised nearly $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through Sneaker Sales in branches and fundraising for the JDRF Walk to Cure. Bank employees and their families took part in the walk.

Todd English Pub and the Shops at Crystals, along with Communities in Schools of Nevada, held a holiday party for and gave presents to more than 20 students and their family members.

Martin-Harris Construction donated $6,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Nevada. Its Holiday Wishes program was in lieu of corporate gifts and sent children to a week at MDA Summer Camp.

Southwest Medical Associates assisted the American Red Cross in its efforts to support the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Money was donated for each “like” on the SMA Facebook page. Employees from Health Plan of Nevada and SMA also collected 20 large boxes of new and used clothing, shoes and non-perishable food items for the effort.

United Way of Southern Nevada received a $50,000 check from Diamond Resorts International to aid in recovery after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The funds were dispersed to the American Red Cross to help victims of the storm.

The Cannery in North Las Vegas ranked No. 1 for the most blood units donated in 2013 to United Blood Services. The Cannery was tops among 57 participating organizations and donated 834 pints of blood.

The Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation provided 19,908 toys to underprivileged children in Southern Nevada through its annual “Fill the Fire Truck” Toy Drive. Las Vegas, Clark County, Henderson, Nellis and North Las Vegas fire departments participated in the three-week effort to collect toys and gift cards for economically challenged children, with the assistance of major community partners Wal-Mart and Findlay Chevrolet.

Shred-it Las Vegas joined with KNPR for the third Nevada Public Radio community-wide Recycling Day. More than 11 tons, or 750 copy paper-sized boxes of personal documents, were shredded free of charge, a new record for the event.
