Never miss baseball or ‘Breaking Bad’ again: New DVR allows six shows to be taped at once

Sick of having to choose what TV shows to watch?

For about $100 a month, a new product from Cox Communications suggests programs you might like based on your viewing habits.

It also allows you to record up to six shows at once.

Cox is marketing the Contour as “a personalized TV experience.” Up to eight people can program their favorite shows into the system, which will make recommendations of other shows each viewer might enjoy.

Contour's DVR can store up to 300 hours of high-definition or 1,000 hours of standard-definition programming, with six channels taping at once.

For customers who already have Cox’s Advanced Preferred Level service, Contour costs an additional $25 a month. Advanced Preferred Level service costs $74 a month.

A Cox spokesman said it’s too early to gauge the response to the new product, which debuted Aug. 5. It has been successful in other markets, particularly among young viewers, he said.

The service is similar to CenturyLink’s Prism, which provides 130 digital channels through DirecTV and allows for four shows to be recorded at once.
