U.S. Senator Harry Reid and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced Friday that an environmental study of the DesertXpress high-speed rail project was completed, paving the way for its groundbreaking. The final Environmental Impact Statement analyzed the environmental impact of the 200-mile rail route through federal lands, a national park and two states. The final route will be approved by the Federal Railroad Administration. Reid and LaHood made the announcement alongside Nevada Department of Transportation Director Susan Martinovich and UNLV President Neal Smatresk on March 25, 2011 at the UNLV Science and Engineering building.
