Shuttle company offers new transportation option for airport

Passengers arriving at McCarran International Airport have a new ground transportation option to get to or from their hotels.

Phoenix-based SuperShuttle had a soft launch at McCarran last week and plans a public event today to promote its van shuttle service. SuperShuttle bills itself as an inexpensive ride-sharing option that competes with taxis, limousines and public transportation.

Rides on SuperShuttle’s 20 nine-passenger vans can be booked online, through a toll-free number or smartphone mobile apps. When vans are not fully booked, passengers can arrange trips on a walk-up basis at the company’s booth outside the north end of the Terminal 1 baggage claim area.

A company spokeswoman said SuperShuttle will expand its fleet, possibly with larger vehicles, if the venture is as successful as managers think it will be.

Rides cost $9 to the Strip and $10 downtown, about half the price of a taxi ride.

But the trip does come with a potential inconvenience.

A van shared by several people could stop multiple times before reaching a destination. The company tries to minimize stops and avoids stopping more than three times in one trip, although that's possible during busy times, a spokeswoman said.

In the company’s first five days of operation over the busy Mexican Independence Day celebration and fight weekend, SuperShuttle provided 5,000 rides.

The Las Vegas outlet is managed by the Alan Waxler Group, a bus and limousine operator.

The company’s public opening today will be highlighted with entertainment from the Blue Man Group to match the company’s blue vans.
