The Governor’s Office of Economic Development on Thursday took a giant stride toward forming an institution in Las Vegas that is expected to become a global authority in developing and managing the world’s most precious resource: fresh water. The organization’s board of directors unanimously approved the terms of an agreement that would form the Nevada Center of Excellence, a public-private joint venture expected to be a leader in water development research, the commercialization of technology associated with water development, providing workforce training and driving economic development. The action was considered by experts to be one of the most significant moves ...

  1. I can just smell the bacon.

  2. This "deal" is clear as mud about how it is going to 'manage water' here in Nevada. What I get out of this article, is that there is some sort of partnership between IBM, DRI, UNLV, OED, and DETR. From there, it gets mighty cloudy on the real details.

Water is about "supply and demand" and that is where "management" along with policies and laws, should be the real players. For too long, Nevada has been exploited for the profit by the few during the "build, baby, build" years. The economic crisis put that to a screaching halt. That is a good thing, because our water supply is becoming scarce and UNSUSTAINABLE here in Southern Nevada, and now there is an unconscienable water grab for Northern Nevada's scarce water supply.

We MUST hold those who rubber stamp any and all building in Southern Nevada accountable (we'll start with the County Planning Commissioners here, as they approve massive projects, even though they know damn well about the water situation---shame, shame, shame on them!!!).

Commenter Richr44 stated, "I can just smell the bacon." Basically, this is about some agencies getting funded to sustain their existence here in Nevada. Presently, their budgets are in starving to near extinction mode, they are trying to save themselves. Okay, that is a good thing, but under the cover managing water, really?

The root of the problem has to do with the real powerbrokers in the water game, and that is about the people who permit UNSUSTAINABLE GROWTH in the name of profits. This is the real crime here. Nothing is being done to change it, thanks to politicians who speak from both sides of their mouths, love of money, and a transcient and apathetic voters. Heaven help us all.

    Blessings and Peace,

  3. The Southern Nevada Water Authority, a REGIONAL AGENCY not another unneeded state agency, already does all of this. And the SNWA has already resolved sourcing water for Clark County for the next 50 years by building a pipeline to clean water sources in the mountains of northern Utah. Now more than 90% of Nevada's population lives in Clark County. Why can't this new State economic development focus on it's new mission?: Attracting and creating new jobs in Nevada now, period. In 2+ years now the Governor has still NOT CREATED 1 JOB!!! There is no reason that he should be elected to a 2nd term.
