Lucky Cab ordered to rehire 6 workers, allow new union vote

A National Labor Relations Board administrative law judge has ruled that a Las Vegas taxi company must allow a new union representation vote and ordered the company to rehire six employees it terminated for union activities.

Judge Lana Parke issued an order Dec. 28 requiring a new vote for the employees of Lucky Cab Co. after finding that managers interfered with a May 6 representation election sought by the Industrial Technical and Professional Employees-Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 4873.

The content of Parke’s order was revealed Tuesday.

Representatives of the cab company did not return calls, but published reports indicate Lucky would appeal the ruling.

“We’re extremely pleased with the result of this ruling and look forward to holding a new election as soon as possible,” the ITPE-OPEIU international representative, Jeff Rusich, said in a release issued by the union.

Parke said Lucky “interfered with the employees’ exercise of a free and reasoned choice” in the representation vote.

Her order also required Lucky to reinstate Almethay Geberselasa, Endale Hailu, Assefa Kindeya, Elias Demeke, Melak Tesema and Mesfin Hambamo, all members of the union’s organizing committee, with back pay and other benefits. Between them, the six terminated employees had 31 years’ experience.

The case was tried in Las Vegas over seven days in late September and early November.

Lucky employs about 240 drivers and operates 150 cabs.
