UNLV business dean leaving for job at University of Central Florida

Paul Jarley is the dean of the Lee Business School at UNLV.

UNLV is looking for a new dean for the Lee Business School following last week’s announcement that Paul Jarley, the business dean for the past five years, is leaving for a job in Florida.

A UNLV spokeswoman on Thursday said faculty and staff were notified last week that Jarley had been named dean of the University of Central Florida College of Business Administration in Orlando, a job he begins on July 1.

"I can't wait to get started. Working together we can build on our rising national prominence to create something uniquely great at UCF. Who wouldn't be excited to be part of that? Go Knights!" Jarley says on a UCF website announcement.

In an email to the College of Business staff, Jarley said: "I have great respect for the many people at UNLV who work tirelessly for this institution in an effort to provide students with a world class education informed by high quality research. It is because of the dedication of its faculty and staff that UNLV remains a place of great potential. It is my sincere hope that the state of Nevada and the Board of Regents will provide the university with a business model that allows the institution to realize its aspirations and maximize its contribution to economic development and diversification."

Jarley was hired by UNLV in 2007 from the University of Kentucky, where he was senior associate dean of business. A UNLV spokeswoman said that at UNLV, Jarley's salary is $282,360. A spokeswoman at the University of Central Florida said information on Jarley's salary is public, but that it wasn't immediately available.

His tenure at UNLV was highlighted by last fall’s donation by the Lee family of $15 million to the school. Much of that money will fund 10 endowed professor positions and the gift was seen as a boost for the school during a time UNLV faced deep budget cuts because of state budgetary problems.

"During his time at UNLV the Lee Business School (formerly the College of Business) has made great strides and we all congratulate Paul for his part in these advances and accomplishments and wish him luck in his new position. A search for a new dean will be commenced immediately in the hopes of identifying a successful candidate as soon as possible,” UNLV Interim Vice President and Provost Michael Bowers said in a note to faculty and staff last week.

In a job post for the dean’s position, UNLV says the successful applicant will be committed to not only academic excellence but to "expansion of cooperative interactions and partnerships with local, regional, national, and international government, industry and private organizations."

The job post notes that the UNLV business school has 85 faculty and 35 staff.

The school includes five departments (Accounting; Economics; Finance; Marketing and International Business; and Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology) and four centers important to the community (Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies, Center for Business and Economic Research, Entrepreneurship Center and the Nevada Small Business Development Center).
