Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada will honor local attorneys for their pro bono work at its annual awards luncheon Dec. 2 at the Rio All-Suites Hotel. Tables and tickets can be purchased through the Legal Aid Center’s website at www.lacsn.org.

Architecture firm honored

The Las Vegas architecture firm Tate Snyder Kimsey has received the Nevada Honor Award and the Western Mountain Region Citation Award for design excellence from the American Institute of Architects for its work on the Lyon County School District’s Silverland Middle School.

Vegas-based CPA earns recognition

Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs has been named by Accounting Today as the “best accounting firm to work for” the second year in a row. The Las Vegas-based company holds the top spot in the category of firms with 15 to 49 employees. It was the only firm in Nevada to receive the award, which was presented at a luncheon Oct. 26. The winning firms will be featured in the December issue of the publication.

Small-business seminars scheduled

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the Veteran Business Outreach Center will offer a seminar on “Small Business Contracting and Networking Opportunities” on Dec. 6 at Bally’s Las Vegas. The session will have a special emphasis on businesses owned by women, veterans and minorities. Registration fee is $20, and more information is available online at www.vboc-ca.org.

Irrigation project completed

Construction on the Anthem Country Club Irrigation Pumping Station was recently completed by Danoski Clutts Building Group. The project services the Anthem Country Club Golf Course. Danoski Clutts Building Group is a full-service general contracting firm.

Sunrise sets education program

Sunrise Hospital has started a community education program on heart valve disease, featuring instruction and presentations by Dr. Branavan Umakanthan, cardiologist, and Dr. Nauman Jahanghir, cardiovascular surgeon.

The program is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in the auditorium at Sunrise, 3186 S. Maryland Pkwy.

After he prgram, nurses will be on hand to discuss valve issues and concerns with participants. The program is free, but registration is required and space is limited. Call 233-5454 to register.

United Way seeks volunteers

The United Way of Southern Nevada is searching for volunteers for a program offering free tax preparation to low- to moderate-income families, individuals and seniors.

The organization is hoping to draw more than 400 people to help in its “Earn It Keep It Save It” collaborative, which runs from Jan. 15 through April 17. Tax preparers, greeters, quality reviews and site coordinators are needed.

During the 2011 tax season, more than 200 volunteers helped 6,000 families claim nearly $8 million in tax refunds, including more than $3.1 million in federal tax credits.
