Nevada is near the bottom of yet another list, this time the best states in which to do business.
Nevada ranked at No. 45 on CNBC’s 2011 Top States for Business survey. But there is some good news: Nevada was up two spots from No. 47 in 2010.
The business news channel and website scored the 50 states on 43 measures of competitiveness developed with input from business groups, including the National Association of Manufacturers and the Council on Competitiveness.
The states received points for their rank in each metric. The categories included cost of doing businesses, quality of life, overall economy and education.
Nevada ranked at No 50 for its basic overall economic health and growth while North Dakota ranked the highest.
Nevada also ranked last for education, for which CNBC looked at K-12 education and the number of higher education institutions in the state.
Nevada best showing was in the business friendliness category — based on legal and regulatory framework — coming in at No. 17. The state ranked No. 18 in the workforce category, which was based on the quality and availability of workers, government-sponsored programs for them and union memberships.
Virginia took back the top spot on CNBC’s top states to do business 2011 list, knocking Texas to No. 2.
Rhode Island took the No. 50 spot.
The full list can be viewed here.

Somehow, I believe this rating is based upon how much government interference and spending is involved. I don't trust the veracity of anything that has the intials NBC attached to it. Maybe now that Comcast has taken ownership, NBC will become more honest about their "reporting" then it was under the ownership of GE and Jeffrey Immelt, Osama Obama's toady!
LOL the manner and frequency with which the faaaaaaaaaar right nuts will attack President Obama is staggering. I guess if this ranking had come from Faux News (We distort - We decide) Mr. Fink would be fine with it.
And what irony that Mr. Fink used this particular thread as an attempt to attack President Obama by connecting him to Osama bin Laden. I suppose that relates to the fact that George Bush couldn't catch the terrorist and President Obama could? Wait no? HA!
Since Mr. Fink went off topic I'll try to bring us back to the point. Nevada is in the toilet because the far right is anti-education. The state can't attract business because we don't have an educated workforce. It appears, given the current state of government, we never will.
As for regulation - while the republican Governor likes to tout that he's pro-business, I can tell you as a business owner, it's MUCH harder and more expensive to get a business license here in Nevada than it is in several other western states.
When the teabaggers took over the GOP they ruined it for everyone. If I could find a truly libertarian, fiscally conservative republican who wasn't a racist and didn't cow-tow to the religious right on social issues, I'd be excited to consider him/her for leadership in our state - with the hope that he or she would understand teachers are not the enemy. No education - no jobs. It's as simple as that.
Scott well stated. I know many people that have businesses and as a former Ops level person for a company and seeing what our company has to go through for various sign offs by different agencies to run we rank low in all categories.
The fact that we run last in education is nothing to be proud of and this matches so many other studies. The fact that the legislatures have done nothing but make it easier for people to walk away from their homes and ruin their credit make more people less attractive for work.
Companies want people dedicated and worthy and if someone strategically walks from a home you have to consider their long term responsibility and maturity. Personal financing is a huge judgement of ones character and has a purpose in the work place.
Time to find a true leader as Scott puts it that can be fiscally conservative without gutting the basic needs and responsibilities that government has. That is to educate, infrastructure, keep people safe and make sure people and business follow through on their contractural obligations.
CNBC must be absolutely, totally incorrect on this one. I've lived here for 22 years and for all that time the local media, press, radio and politicians all have told me that this no-tax, low-tax, right-to-work state was the reason "all" these businesses in America and across the planet want to locate in Nevada. Expect a correction and a rewrite from CNBC any moment now.
Republicans have told us over and over that low taxes expands business. Nevada has the second lowest tax burden, so why aren't we at the top?
Funny thing is, the top 10 on this list are welfare states. States that receive more federal dollars than their citizens pay in.
If our low-tax, business friendly attitude was truly enough, we'd be at the top of list... but alas, we're not!
Wake up Nevada! Tourism alone is never going to be enough to sustain us and our uneducated workforce is only helping to stiffle our economic growth.
Apparently low taxes isn't enough. I am sure that companies who would like to expand to Nevada look at an uneducated work force. Where will these companies find their employees or get their own children educated?? Our education system was in the toilet bowl and Sandoval sunk it to the bottom of that bowl.
This "report" is way off, for example it says Nevada cost of living is higher than Michigan or IL? The gas there cost $1 more gallon to start with! What about all the cheap housing NV has to offer? Quality of life #1 is Hawaii yet it is #50 on the list. I know for a fact it cost more to live in St. Pete FL than Las Vegas NV. Anyone can make a list! Business wise maybe it has some merit, even that I am not sure of. NV scored high on business climate, workforce and infrastructure, what more do you need?
Poor FINK.
The CNBC report is pure garbage. I am a tax accountant and can tell you that the business climate here in Nevada is far superior to most states. Virginia has a big corporate tax. Try to open a business in Virginia with all the messy procedures they require. The Nevada Department of Taxation is a pleasure to deal with. On a factual basis do not believe a word in the CNBC report. No wonder their ratings are going down fast.
I have a nightmare every night. I see Nevada in 5 years. The higher education system is destroyed, as well as K-12. The K-12 classrooms are filled with 50+ students because CCSD can't hire teachers because no teacher will move to Nevada, and the qualified substitute teachers aren't enough to fill all the vacancies. Schools are closed and standing empty. Crime rates are jumping and the visitation to the strip has dropped to record low levels. No high tech businesses have moved to Nevada and in fact, businesses are leaving because they can't find qualified workers and anybody who is qualified won't come to Nevada. Unemployment is Nevada is triple the national rate, which has dropped as the recovery has taken hold. All along the strip, casinos are closing towers. The long shuttered construction projects are still waiting for completion, and more and more strip malls are empty of stores. The foreclosure rate has doubled as more and more people lose jobs or just walk away. In some blocks, the number of vacant homes outnumber the occupied ones. The population of Las Vegas has dropped by half as people leave to search for jobs. Is it a nightmare or will it become reality? I am afraid that we are well on our way to finding out, and that makes me terrified for this is my home, my children's home and my grandchildren's home. Is this the future you want for your state and city? Because if it is, you are well on your way to getting it, be careful what you wish for, you may get it.
@petef and NVFisherman. If all that was needed was a low tax structure and little government interference to bring businesses to Nevada, why do we drive past empty strip mall after empty strip mall? Why is unemployment still at 12.4%? You would think with all the businesses flocking to Nevada we would have workers arriving by the thousands to fill all the new positions created by all the businesses moving in? I would simply suggest that you might need a quality education system that is adequately funded, an educated workforce, and things like that. If there wasn't something more needed, the state of Nevada should be short workers with all the new jobs being created by the businesses beating down our doors to move here.
@Scott_Bourne-
Hi there, Scott! I'm not a racist, ostensibly agnostic, and you're right, teachers aren't the enemy- teachers' unions and their administrative co-conspirators are.
There's plenty of "me's" out here who knows what needs to be fixed. We're standing by, s'mores makings handy, and letting the fire do all the work- sterilizing the structure, ensuring dimwits like you, who are simply too stupid to realize how stupid they are, have been abated from Nevada before we swoop in with our cash reserves and Objectivist solutions.
Have a nice day!
P.S. Maybe, if it all works out, and you learn a thing or two along the way, we might have a spot for you in the mailroom...
Good ol uncle harry is running this country into the ground and now it comes out that Nv is going down hill as well! All i can say is that you libs voted him to stay into office so wallow in your stupidity!!! The man is nothing short of a lieing crook!!!!
@Green Dragon you're a perfect example of Nevada's poor education system - thank you for helping to make my point.
@erumrunner I think you got it wrong - your pals like republicans John Ensign, Jim Gibbons and the current hack in the mansion Sandoval are the ones we have to thank for this. If that idiot Sharon Mangle had managed to wonder into the Senate things would be 1000% times worse. Thanks for playing.
@Scott_Bourne-
I wasn't educated in Nevada and I don't live there (full-time) anymore either. So how, exactly did I make whatever point you purport to have?
