Las Vegas boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his bodyguard entourage have been named in another lawsuit alleging assault.
Attorneys for Anthony R. Cliff, who lives in Clark County, filed suit Friday in state court in Las Vegas against Mayweather, his company Mayweather Promotions LLC and others.
The Clark County District Court lawsuit charges that at a casino last year, after Cliff tried to take Mayweather’s photo and made some comments about a potential fight for Mayweather, Mayweather replied that Cliff was disrespecting him and gave the thumbs-down sign to his bodyguards.
That was a "signal for the bodyguards to attack Cliff, which they then did, striking Cliff in the face, knocking, pulling or pushing Cliff to the ground,"’ the suit charges.
All of this happened on March 27, 2010, in the valet parking area of the Palms hotel-casino, the lawsuit says.
After the bodyguards knocked Cliff to the ground, his head struck the pavement and the bodyguards "then repeatedly kicked Cliff in the back and side,"’ the suit says.
The suit accuses Mayweather and his company of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention of employees.
The Palms also was sued and is accused of negligence.
The hotel-casino was accused of failing to have adequate security in the valet parking area and of failing to keep Mayweather and his entourage in check.
The Palms "and/or its employees were aware of and/or should reasonably have been aware of the violent and/or dangerous nature, propensities and tendencies of Mayweather and/or his bodyguards," the suit alleges.
Cliff is represented in the suit by attorneys with the Las Vegas law firm of Gazda & Tadayon.
Attorneys for Mayweather and the Palms have not yet responded to the suit.
Mayweather’s attorneys, however, are contesting a suit filed last month claiming his bodyguards attacked and injured nightclub bouncer Clay Gerling at Drai’s Nightclub on the Las Vegas Strip.
