Downtown’s Plaza hotel set to reopen after renovations

The Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas will reopen to guests Sept. 1 after an extensive overhaul of the 40-year-old property.
The hotel-casino closed in September 2010 for a $35 million renovation of the casino, restaurants and more than 1,000 hotel rooms.
The Plaza’s rooms have been refurbished with new wall coverings, furnishings, floors and fixtures, all purchased at a discounted price from the halted Fontainebleau project on the Strip.
The Plaza website is taking reservations for the reopening, with rates starting at $44 for a standard room, but as high as $119 for some weekends in September.
Prior to its grand reopening, the Plaza will host a soft opening on Aug. 24 for its casino.
When the property temporarily closed in September, it left about 400 employees out of work. A spokeswoman for the property said the Plaza will be launching a hiring effort to attract new employees while also bringing back some former employees. More information is expected to be announced later this month.
The Plaza is run by Anthony Santo, who is a consultant for Tamares, the landlord of the Plaza, the Western and the Las Vegas Club hotel-casinos. Santo gained control of the properties in August 2010.
One thing not returning to the Plaza is Firefly, a tapas restaurant formerly located in the glass dome overlooking Fremont Street. Firefly owner John Simmons said last week the restaurant wasn’t “making any money.”

Very pretty rooms but I hope the changes are not just cosmetic. Stayed there a couple of times in the past ten years and each time plumbing was an issue such as toilets that don't flush and slow bathtub drains.
Will be happy to see it opened back up because downtown does not need any more shells sitting there doing nothing and the jobs will be welcome.
Something the Plaza needs to remember though is to service your clients. For many years the service was great but the last five years the service left a lot to be desired. They seemed to forget who was making them money.
We will visit them again as a local but if they have not changed their ways of treating locals they won't see us a second time.
More good news for Downtown Las Vegas.
It really feels like the bottom was hit a year or so ago, and from now on nothing but good news will flow from my favourite vacation destination, Downtown Las Vegas!
I just happen to drive past The Plaza earlier today. There was construction work going on in the front circular driveway. I did notice the Plaza sign still has The Rat Pack show info with times etc. I would suggest they change that to announce the new opening date and start to create more of a buzz.
OMG blow these eyesores up already--this piece of crap should have been imploded 20 years ago already---also fitzgeralds, sahara, circus, riv to name a few--enough nice places are half empty--get rid of these $hitholes.

This news can not come at a better time. I took the wife to see "The Rat Pack" show back in March, along with two other shows on the strip and BY FAR, we had the best time at the Plaza's Rat Pack Show vs. the other two we saw when we visited. The supper they served at the show was superb, the waiters and waitresses attentive, the show outstanding, and just a wonderful evening of true entertainment.
We had to stay at the Golden Gate because the hotel at the Plaza was being renovated so now I can't wait to get back to the Plaza and stay there for our week planned in November. I just hope that they also renovated the tennis courts on top of the hotel and that they kept the casino as close to "old Vegas" as possible. The Plaza is truly the "Grand Dame" of the downtown Fremont strip and I for one can't wait for it's reopening! They have the best sports bet parlor of any of the downtown casinos, they always have inexpensive Black Jack and Roulette, the tennis for some exercise, The GREAT Rat Pack Show, and I'll bet that that they pop a new restaurant that will be up to the Plaza's high standards as well.
C'mon back Plaza, you are missed !!!!
This is wonderful news. More of the 'older' hotel/casinos need to renovate and NOT implode (as suggested by Mr. Lucky). Las Vegas certainly has enough high-end resorts... we are in dire need of low and middle-end establishments. The Plaza was once an enjoyable venture (when it was Union Plaza) and it can return to it's prior glory with renovation and refurbishing. I, for one, will anxiously await the opportunity to stay and play again at the Plaza.
El Cortez, The Trop and now The Plaza. Keep it happening, Las Vegas. And we who love you will continue to vacation in your fun-filled city.
