A Southwest jet takes off as Mexican airline Volaris makes its inaugural arrival at McCarran International Airport Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

Discount Mexican air carrier Volaris, which inaugurated nonstop service between Las Vegas and Guadalajara in late March, today began nonstop daily flights between Mexico City and McCarran International Airport.

Volaris, which flies 144-passenger Airbus A319 twin-engine jets on the route, offers daily flights arriving from Mexico City International Airport at 12:10 p.m., departing for Mexico's capital city at 1:40 p.m.

The new flights would expand visitation from the country that is the second-largest source, behind Canada, of international visitors to Las Vegas.

"We are confident that with our outstanding customer service and on-time record, we will provide an effective connection for travelers in Mexico City to the ultimate entertainment destination, Las Vegas," said Holger Blankenstein, chief commercial officer of Volaris, in a statement.

Volaris is in a partnership with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, the busiest carrier at McCarran, enabling Southwest customers to transfer to Volaris flights to Mexico and Volaris customers to take advantage of Southwest‚s network.

The growth of Volaris, which flies more than 50 routes between more than two dozen cities, has helped minimize some of the losses of flights by financially distressed Mexican airlines Mexicana, Aviacsa and Aeromexico.

Volaris began flying its Guadalajara-Las Vegas route on March 30 and on the date of the first flight, the company announced two more weekly flights to and from Guadalajara, which began May 20.
