McCarthy Building Companies raised more than $8,000 for the American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, held Oct. 1. McCarthy organized more than 50 walkers and was a sponsor of the event. McCarthy and Tyco Fire Company teamed up Nov. 14 to make improvements to the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City. More than 180 community volunteers donated construction-related services and materials for repairs and upkeep.
The Southern Nevada Commercial Group, an alliance of local businesses, raised nearly $7,000 for the American Heart Association and Family Promise at its annual golf tournament at Silverstone Golf Club.
Chase presented a check for $20,000 to Goodwill of Southern Nevada at the opening of its Las Vegas banking branch Nov. 5. The money will be used to help fund a jobs program. Chase also held an employee volunteering event at Goodwill the following day.
Gold & Silver Pawn Shop employees donated $11,500 to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will distribute it to the 22 Shriners hospitals nationally. The money was raised through T-shirt sales by the business, best known as the setting for the “Pawn Stars” TV series.
Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and Vegas PBS have received the Neighborhood Builders award from Bank of America, which provides each nonprofit organization a $200,000 unrestricted grant and leadership training. The bank also announced its annual Local Heroes award recipients, who each received a $5,000 donation for the nonprofit charity of their choice. The individuals and the charities they selected: Judy Cebulko, Lied Discovery Children’s Museum; Monique Harris, Southern Nevada Children First; Chris Cappas, Goodwill of Southern Nevada; Camille Duskin, Hattie’s House; and Candice Nicols, Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada.
City National Bank raised almost $20,000 for United Way of Southern Nevada through its annual Workplace Giving Program. The bank also is partnering with Barnes & Noble for a multistate book drive to benefit schools in Nevada, California, New York and Nashville, Tenn. As part of the program, City National will match book donations to local schools up to $50,000.
Home furnishings retailer RC Willey made a $7,500 donation to the Shade Tree, the 24-hour accessible shelter designed specifically to meet the needs of women and children in Southern Nevada.
Community Management Group has donated office space as a food drop-off location for Three Square Food Bank through Dec. 20. CMG is at 3360 West Sahara Ave., Suite 200. Donations can be dropped off from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council collected more than 5,700 professional items, including suits, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry, at its Fall Suit Drive at NV Energy on Nov. 4. In conjunction with the clothing drive, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood served as drop-off location for donated business attire.
MGM Resorts International employees donated more than 98 tons of canned food to Three Square Food Bank. The 98 tons of food will provide more than 151,045 meals through the Program Partners program. The group donated 38 tons in 2010.
The CarMax Foundation has awarded $12,500 in grants to Las Vegas youth-related organizations. The Las Vegas-area recipients and the amounts they received: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, $5,000, for its Site-Based Match program, which connects adult volunteers with elementary school-aged children; Street Teens, $5,000, for the Sanctuary Drop-In Center, where teens can connect with a family member in times of need; and Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, $2,500, for Troop 83’s Light Up the Night program for children with cancer.
