In a state still mired in recession with 12.9 percent unemployment, just 33 Nevada companies are included in the new Inc. Magazine list of the nation’s 5,000 fastest-growing companies.

That compares to 84 companies on the list in Inc.’s September issue from neighboring Utah, known for having a more diversified economy and its efforts to promote its technology industry.

The highest-ranking Nevada company on the list, at No. 40, is digital marketing company CPAlead of Las Vegas.

The list says its sales of $35.1 million in 2010 represented a three-year growth rate of 4,644 percent. As an advertising and marketing company, it has 22 employees.

Among the best-known Nevada companies on the list is Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, ranked at No. 3,714. The Las Vegas company’s sales last year of $39.4 million were up 41 percent from 2007, Inc.’s list said.

Among Nevada companies on the Inc. list, just four are in the software or information technology industries – perhaps a reflection of the small role technology firms play in the Nevada economy.

That compares to seven companies apiece in the fields of advertising/marketing and business products and services.

Inc. said its 2011 list of fast-growing businesses ranks firms based on percentage revenue growth from 2007 through 2010.

To qualify, companies must be privately held and independent with minimum revenue in 2010 of $2 million.
