The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's board of directors unanimously approved a deal Tuesday that makes former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman the official ambassador of Las Vegas.
Goodman's title will be chairman of the LVCVA host committee, a new committee comprised of a dozen community leaders from different Las Vegas business sectors.
Under the two-year contract, Goodman will be paid $60,000 a year as an independent contractor with an option to extend for two more years.
Goodman's duties will include welcoming trade shows and conventions to the city, conducting media interviews, educating the public on the tourism industry and promoting Las Vegas.
Talks of the deal surfaced in April when Goodman said at a housing conference that he was meeting with officials from the LVCVA to possibly become part of a branding campaign for Las Vegas.
In addition to his role with the LVCVA, Goodman's other post-mayoral duties will include opening a steakhouse in downtown's renovated Plaza hotel-casino.

Hardly putting your best foot forward, Las Vegas. Rossi was fine. The new bum is regarded as an idiot in the real world. At least the $60K salary isn't as high as one might have feared.
That 60K is some of the best money they have ever spent. Mr. Goodman will get Las Vegas 100 times that in FREE press around the world.
He has been able to keep us in the lime light even during the bad times.
No one has ever been a better promoter of Vegas then Mr. Goodman. Glad to see he will continue to do what he does best, bring in the people and the money to Las Vegas.
Vegaslee has the right of it. The combination of Oscar, showgirls and Bombay gin are as much a part of the Vegas brand as the Welcome sign is. It's going to be fun seeing what Carolyn can come up with to match it (she'll never top it.)
He doesn't know what to do with himself... 60k isn't a bad price for a position like that, but my guess is he is receiving compensation from other places anyhow.
Lookout for a pair of ignorant fanboys of the bum, above. NOBODY comes to Vegas because of him. Nobody outside of here even thinks of him, except when he makes a stupid remark. Even then, they just think, "that was a stupid remark." And then they forget about him and Vegas, and resume their lives.
Talk about a dopey belief. Because we pay attention to him here, everybody else around the country is too, and flocking here for it?? Durrrr.....
Vegas is back for Las Vegans and those who love it, and that's great news.

The good folks at the LVCVA work hard for conventioneers and tourists, all on behalf of Las Vegas. The Bum besmirches all the hard work. Just maybe, this ceremonial post is how we can keep him stowed and out of the way, until he's too far gone to get up off his bar stool at the Plaza.
