Oscar Goodman in talks with LVCVA over ‘brand of Las Vegas’ role

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is shown in his office at City Hall on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011.

Mayor Oscar Goodman said today at a housing conference that he is meeting with officials from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to possibly become part of a branding campaign for Las Vegas.

“I’m meeting with some people from the convention authority to talk about whether we can work out something where I could become the brand of Las Vegas,” Goodman said.

The mayor said the position is “very generic” right now, but said he would have more details after today’s meeting.

“I will only consider if it is a serious job. I will not become a caricature of myself in my next life. If it is a serious job and I can do some good, and there’s some discussion about me becoming the brand of Las Vegas and promoting tourism in Las Vegas, I think I could do some good for the community,” Goodman said.

LVCVA Vice President of Public Affairs Vince Alberta said in a statement that nothing has been finalized.

“The LVCVA continuously evaluates opportunities to market and brand Las Vegas. We have had initial discussions with Mayor Goodman regarding a possible role to help promote the destination. Mayor Goodman has been a tremendous ambassador for Las Vegas during his tenure on the LVCVA board of directors. At this time, no decisions have been made," he said.

Goodman now serves as chairman of the LVCVA but will be replaced by Vice Chairman and County Commissioner Tom Collins at the end of his term.
