The Henderson City Council approved a temporary business license Tuesday night for Intrepid Gaming LLC to operate the shuttered Casino MonteLago at Lake Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas-based company filed an application for liquor and non-restricted gaming business licenses with the Nevada Gaming Commission in mid-February.

To receive final approval for the licenses, the state gaming commission, the Henderson City Council, the Nevada Department of Taxation and the Southern Nevada Health District must sign off on the approvals.

The application has not been approved by the gaming commission, which is vetting the company.

Jon Berkley, the former CEO of the now-defunct Las Vegas Gaming Inc., owns Intrepid Gaming. Marcus Suan, a former vice president for slot operations at Boyd Gaming, is the company’s chief operating officer and general manager, according to the company’s website.

According to documents filed with Henderson’s business licensing department, Berkley has a 49 percent ownership interest in the business. Parent company Intrepid Gaming LLC has 51 percent.

Casino MonteLago shut its doors in March 2010, a week after the former Ritz-Carlton hotel announced it was closing. The closure resulted in the layoffs of 170 casino employees.

The Ritz-Carlton reopened as Ravella on Feb. 11. Three days later, Intrepid Gaming filed its business license application with the Nevada Gaming Commission.

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen said he was pleased to see the casino stirring back to life. He said he expects a grand reopening in May.
