The Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada elected board members: Sue Covey, chairwoman; Sandy Windom, vice chairwoman; Debbie Avery, secretary; Trudy Rutter, treasurer; David Abraham, board member; Joseph Brooks, board member; Joey Calarco, board member; Frank Tiberi, board member; and Lori Wright, board member.
Justin Kalb, president of commercial construction at Kalb Construction, was elected chairman of the board of directors of Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. Justin Schmiedel, administrative director of the Cleveland Clinic Nevada, also was elected to the board.
The Cure 4 the Kids Foundation received the Clark County Medical Society’s Winged Heart Award, which recognizes nonprofit organizations committed to quality health care in Southern Nevada. Additionally, a Golf 4 the Kids event raised more than $46,000 for the Cure 4 the Kids Foundation and the Nevada chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.
Aid for AIDS of Nevada was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. The three-year accreditation is the highest level given by CARF. This was the second time AFAN earned the recognition.
The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada received $3,500 from the James Joseph Ford Foundation. D.L. Dickens Elementary School students awarded the center a first-place grant through the Every Generation Gives Project. Fifth-graders listened to presentations from nonprofits, debated the causes, then decided how grant money should be allocated.
The Public Education Foundation awarded almost $770,000 in college scholarships to more than 370 Clark County students. Over the past two decades, the nonprofit has given $8.6 million in scholarship money to thousands of local high school seniors. The foundation operates the Teachers Exchange supplies warehouse and a leadership academy for Clark County School District administrators and is the largest manager of scholarship funds locally.
Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace won the Gold Plate Donor Award for selling the most meals during Las Vegas Restaurant Week this spring. Mesa Grill sold 1,997 meals, worth $9,985 in donations. Money went to Three Square Food Bank. It was the fifth consecutive win for Mesa Grill.
To coincide with the mixed martial arts organization’s 20th anniversary, 20 Tuff-N-Uff athletes volunteered at Three Square Food Bank. The fighters unpacked, sorted and boxed donated food to be distributed to families and agencies across the valley.
The Lev Restaurant Group donated a percentage of its June sales to the Grant a Gift Autism Foundation.
Local Food 4 Less stores provided part of a $2.3 million donation to support the USO and its Honoring Our Heroes campaign. Since 2010, the Kroger Co. has given more than $8.5 million to the USO.
Local Whole Foods Markets collected bottled water and donations for the HELP20 Campaign, which distributes bottled water to the homeless.
The board of the Nevada Arts Council approved 120 grants worth $609,623 to support arts programs and projects statewide.
Honey Salt is raising money for various charities through Aug. 22 with a special, three-course menu. Five dollars from each meal purchased will be donated. The charities include the Torino Foundation, United Way of Southern Nevada, Three Square, Desert Reign, Opportunity Village, Green Our Planet, Keep Memory Alive, the Agassi Foundation, the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, Create a Change Now and Girls on the Run.
The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood collected donations in June for the Gay and Lesbian Community Center and in July for Dress for Success Southern Nevada.
Back Bar USA will partner with Aid for AIDS of Nevada for the 28th annual Black and White Party on Aug. 23 at the Hard Rock Hotel. Back Bar will develop cocktails for the event.
Colliers International – Las Vegas raised more than $70,000 for children’s charities during the company’s 20th annual Links for Life Charity Golf Tournament.
Wells Fargo employees worked with Go Mount Charleston volunteers to clean the area near Mary Jane Falls and the Old Ski Tow in honor of National Trails Day.
Matt Smith Physical Therapy hosted a school supply drive for Don E. Hayden Elementary School, where 54 percent of students come from low-income families.
Tropical Smoothie Café donated money raised through a flip flop key fob promotion to Camp Sunshine.
Station Casinos donated $10,000 to the Nevada Military Support Alliance to help pay for the creation of the Las Vegas Fisher House, where military and veteran families can stay for free while a family member is receiving treatment at a military medical center. The company pledged $1 from every Memorial Day slot tournament entry.
Tronox gave Hobby Lobby gift cards to members of Robert L. Taylor Elementary School’s Robotics Club and the school’s president’s awardees. Tronox funds the Robotics Club and allows employees to volunteer as student mentors. Additionally, Tronox received a special commendation from the Henderson City Council for donating Arbor Day school calendars, which show environmental drawings submitted by students.
