Las Vegan wins first real-money online poker tourney in U.S.

A winner has been crowned in the first ever real-money online poker tournament in the United States.

Amateur poker player Daniel Healy of Las Vegas won Ultimate Poker’s $10,000 May 5 tournament on UltimatePoker.com, the first fully legal online poker site released in the country.

Taking the final pot in the 200-player tournament, Healy won a first place prize of $4,173.

“It is really exciting to be a part of history, winning the first tournament,” Healy said in a statement. “I have been keeping up with the news updates and poker blogs ever since Black Friday hit and was extremely excited to hear that online poker is here.”

Since the tournament ended, Ultimate Poker officials doubled the player limit of Sunday tournaments to 400 due to demand, doubling the potential prize pot to $20,000.

The next tournament starts Sunday at 6 p.m.
