A new data center is in the works for North Las Vegas.
Telecom Real Estate Services plans to build a 13.8 megawatt facility inside an existing industrial building at 4527 Losee Road, just north of East Craig Road. The North Las Vegas-based company plans to start construction this spring, founder and CEO Kevin Keating said Thursday.
The project is expected to cost between $40 million and $50 million.
Canada’s H&R Real Estate Investment Trust bought the 50,000-square-foot building in May for $2 million through an entity known as Block Data Center Las Vegas I LP. H&R will own the equipment inside the data center, although Keating’s company will operate it, he said.
The building is currently occupied by JCH Enterprises, which distributes industrial electronic equipment and manufactures fuel maintenance systems for diesel fuel storage tanks.
Efforts to reach a company representative were not immediately successful.
Telecom has built and developed eight data centers in the United States and Canada since its founding in the late 1990s, but this is its first project in the Las Vegas area. Unlike with this project, Keating typically builds facilities with the intention of selling them off.
Meanwhile, Keating isn’t the only one bringing new data centers to the valley.
In late August, Cobalt Data Centers announced it began renovation work for its Cobalt Cheyenne Data Center. The 34,000-square-foot facility is located at 7710 W. Cheyenne Ave., in a space formerly occupied by PurchasePro, an e-commerce company that filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002.
Las Vegas-based Cobalt Data was formed last year and plans to operate three data centers in the region. The first, on West Cheyenne, is slated to open in December.
The second, a 64,000-square-foot facility on East Sahara Avenue, is expected to open in 2014. As of late August, there was no timeline for the third center, a 388,000-square-foot, four-building complex on St. Rose Parkway in Henderson.
