Days after Henderson-based Zappos suffered a public relations blow inflicted by a security breach, the company drew far more positive attention when Fortune ranked the online retailer No. 11 on its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2012.

The list, published at money.cnn.com, attributes Zappos' high rankings partly to the company's free-spirited working atmosphere.

“Now in its second year under Amazon.com, Zappos maintains its zany culture," the site said. "New last year: Zfrog awards, which let employees pitch new business ideas, and on-site 'laughter yoga' classes.”

Fortune reports that the company has 3,003 employees with almost 70 percent job growth after 1,195 jobs were added in one year, the highest job growth of all companies on the list.

The most common salaried job, fulfillment center process manager, pays an average annual salary of $47,516. Employees also enjoy 100 percent health-care coverage and a compressed work week.

About 21 percent of employees are minorities, and 51 percent are women. As of Jan. 2, there will still 124 job openings at the company and its 2010 revenue came in at $1.64 billion.

"We are honored to make Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the fourth year in a row," Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh said. "It is the strength of our culture that has really gotten us through our most challenging times over the years, and this week is certainly no exception."

Zappos, the only Southern Nevada-based company on the Fortune list, dropped five spots from its place at No. 6 in 2011. Fortune noted the recent hacking incident in its report.

On Sunday afternoon, Hsieh informed Zappos employees that a hacker had accessed the company's internal systems and compromised the names, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses and partial credit card information of as many as 24 million customers.

California-based Google came in as the No. 1 best company for which to work, followed by No. 2 Boston Consulting Group and No.3 SAS Institute.

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct an extensive employee survey. This year, 280 companies and 246,000 employees participated in the survey.
