New shopping center planned for McCarran Airport

McCarran Airport is getting a specialty shopping mall in 2013.

Travel retailer Hudson Group announced Monday that airport officials and the Clark County Commission approved Hudson’s plan to build six new retail stores and kiosks in the rotunda area of Concourse D. Incoming shops include Hugo Boss, Juicy Couture and Guess, while kiosks will house Kiehl’s, a skin and hair care brand, and Tech on the Go, an electronics store.

“This new mall creates a unique shopping environment showcasing upscale, universally recognized brands,” Hudson Group President and CEO Joseph DiDomizio.

The stores will be located in the area where passengers from the main terminal exit the airport tram. Aside from an information booth, the space is currently empty. They are scheduled to open in early 2013.

“The idea behind the rotunda mall follows that seen in many foreign airports where passengers frequently must pass through a maze of shops going from security to the gates,” Clark County Aviation Director Randall Walker said. “Travelers are willing to shop, and shop before they get to the gate.”

Hudson’s sales this year at McCarran Airport are on track to outpace last year’s, officials said. They declined to reveal specific amounts.

Clark County commissioners unanimously agreed Nov. 1 to extend Hudson’s airport lease by a decade, to 2030. In return, the company pledged to spend $15.5 million on airport concessions. The rotunda project is part of that plan.

Hudson is expected to spend $2 million on the project, while the airport will invest just over $1 million on infrastructure improvements.

Hudson began contracting with McCarran in 2003 and now operates 22 newsstands and specialty shops in the airport. The company runs more than 600 stores in 70 airports internationally.
