Victorville, Calif. — On a dusty, rock-strewn expanse at the edge of the Mojave Desert, a company linked to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants to build a bullet train that would rocket tourists from the middle of nowhere to the gambling palaces of Las Vegas.

This idea needs to be sold to Californians and the state of Calif. Nevadans will benefit, but they're only an afterthought in the construction of the project!!
I've been following this story for years and can't seem to wrap my head around a train that starts/stops in Victorville. I'm originally from the LA area and visited Vegas 3 to 4 times per month. The idea that I might stop in Victorville, park my car and take the train the rest of the way is insanity. It wouldn't happen. If i'm already in Victorville on my trip, the rest of the drive is easy. For me to stop, park my car, pay for parking, pay $75 to $100 for the train is pure fiction. I wouldn't do it and I don't know anyone who would. For me to even consider a train ride from LA to Vegas, it would need to start somewhere convenient in LA and take me directly to the Vegas strip. Even then, I'm not sure I would do it since I would be without my car. Parking in Vegas is free, abundant, convenient and safe.
Nevadans will benefit? What are you smoking AZ? The only ones that will benefit are the developers who won't put any of their own money in the deal put will screw the government and the taxpayers with "grants" and loans that will never be able to be serviced with the limited number of people who may find this train to nowhere a benefit.
It is a way for Sig Rogich to make more millions and that's why Hairy Reid redirected his support from maglev to desert Express. Hasn't happy harry already got them nearly 50 million in gov't grants? not a bad gig if you can get it. Come up with a stupid idea, have your high powered political friends direct Gov't grant money your way, and never end up building anything, and if they do build it, developers get billions in Fed and private loans that will never be paid back. Anyone getting a govt grant more than $500,000 should have to account for every dollar of that grant or loan backed or issued by the government. Salaries of grant recipients and their employees should have max caps on them. But don't expect that to happen because then the average joe would see how much of that grant and loan money actually goes to ridiculous salaries and expenses for the developers. this is not about building a train to nowhere, it is more about doling out federal grant and loan money to political friendlies, who have no problem donating some of that money back to the same politicians that helped them get the grants and loans in the first place..........They just need a vehicle to grab the grant money. The train to nowhere will resemble Solyndra if the government keeps throwing money at them. A whole bunch of well paid execs and political friendlies, no viable or practical train service and another screwing for the taxpayer. Business as usual in Nevada
Yeah this one really takes the cake. So beyond stupid it could only be cooked up in Nevada, a state that is clearly attempting to get itself into the Guiness Book of World Records for ranking highest on the most lists of "worsts" in the nation.
Only a few more months before I'm gone. The days can't go fast enough.
The desert express train that stops in Victorville Ca. could not go any further even If developers wanted It to. It seems the steels wheels can't climb over mountains. Unlike the Meglevi train which has no problem climbing over mountains and can easily make the trip all the way to Los Angeles. The Meglevi can get to Los Angeles faster that then Desert Express can get to Victorville. So truly the Desert Express Is a train to no where.
Californians count for HALF of Las Vegas visitors. Jeeze, what's all the worry. If they want to take a train instead of drive or fly, let them. The stupidity of saying that a plane flight is so fast and easy is absurd. Park your car at the airport, ($20/day generally,) go through security, flight delays, baggage fees, etc., it's not $100 round trip - that's B.S. And you've wasted 3-4 hours of your time at the airport. And people could start partying on the train. Also, a lot of people don't want to spend $100 each way in gas to and from Vegas and the wear and tear on their vehicle. And lots of folks are tired of driving 8 hours round trip as well. The average Vegas goer, and you can check it out from the LVCVA, is 50 years old, not 20 or 30. Quite frankly, people who drive here are idiots -- what do you need your car for if you're here for an average stay of four days? So you can waste time in Strip traffic wasting more money on gas? If you come here just plan on a few cab fares and relax for cryin' out loud. This will save the Vegas traveler from Vacaville money -- and time -- and they can start enjoying themselves as soon as they're on board. Again, if our number one meal ticket, Californians, want to take a train we should help them do that if anything at all.
Wasteful nonsense, not deserving of a tax subsidy. The Las Vegas monorail should serve as an example of this cockeyed thinking. Conventional train service directly to Los Angeles from Las Vegas would be a worthy test of the market, at a fraction of the cost. What you see is what you get, and a high speed train to Victorville is a joke.
Steel wheels can't climb mountains? Have you told that to the engineers at the Union Pacific and the Burlington-Northern-Santa Fe?
Leric Goodman, Let me re- pharse, what I said steel wheels on steel rails cannot make the climb over mountains( CajonPass) as a high speed rail system.Conventional trains have to slow down and brake to make it over these mountains. We are talking about high speed passenger rail system ,not slow moving freight hauling trains.
I was born and raised in L.A. I'd have zero interest in traveling to Victorville then taking a train. If I lived in Victorville, maybe. Sorry, but those in SoCal won't buy the concept. Silly.
